English Debate for Senior High School

English Debate

General Conditions

Debate competition with Asian Parliamentary System has several conditions, such as:

  1. The debate will take place between two teams that consist of three persons each.
  2. Those two teams will be directed as the Government team and the Opposition team.
  3. The position determination as the Government and the Opposition team will be drawn before the competition starts.
  4. The members of each team will be positioned as the first speaker, the second speaker, and the third speaker before the competition starts.
  5. The motion will be given 30 minutes before the debate and that time is also used for case building.



The Government Team

The government team has to define the motion and support it with giving strong arguments. The government team gives the first definition of the motion that should be appropriate enough to be the topic of the debate.



The Opposition Team

The opposition team has to be against the motion from the government team and build a problem comparison to the government team. If the opposition team thinks the definition is wrong or not debatable, they could challenge the definition and give an alternative definition. 



Motions

Prepared motions would be given in the technical meeting. Impromptu motions would be given before the case building.



Case Building
  • Construct your case and what your team will debate about 
  • The time is 30 minutes 
  • Mobile phones, calculator, laptop, printed materials and any gadgets are forbidden during the case building and the debate
  • Stopwatch is allowed to be brought inside the room 
  • The government will build the case inside the classroom while the opposition will build the case outside the classroom 
  • The team who has been positioned 3 times in the current position may



Walk Out 
  • Team who comes more than ten minutes late will be counted to walk out on that round. 
  • Team that only consists of less than three members is allowed to join the debate, but losing the chance of being the Best Team. 
  • Team who walks out during the preliminary will not be eligible to be positioned on the quarter final.


First Speakers Of The Government

The main responsibilities are: 
  • To define and set up the debate 
  • To present the team position and case 
  • To make one or two arguments


First Speaker Of The Opposition

This speaker should: 
  • Respond to the Definition and Set-up 
  • Allowed to challenge the definition if the definition is not debatable
  • Present the opposition case and position, rebut the PM’s case 
  • Make one or two arguments



Second Speakers In Both Teams

This speaker is responsible to: 
  • Defend their team case (rebuts) 
  • Attack the case of their opponents 
  • Make one or two arguments


Third Speakers In Both Teams
  • Briefly summarize their team’s case 
  • Summarize and prioritize the most important issues in the debate 
  • Analyze those issues


Reply Speech

Reply speech may only be given by the first or second speaker in both teams.

This speaker is responsible to: 
  • Tell everyone what the debate is about 
  • Summarize the position of both teams 
  • Compare those position
  •  Tell everyone why their team should win






Grading Criteria

  1. Matter (40%) 
  • The contents of arguments cover the substance of case 
  • Arguments define the examples, cases, evidences, and facts logically. 
  • Arguments could support  the team and are strong enough. 
  • Arguments include: 
    • Assertion: Statements and testimonies
    • Reasons: Reasons that cover the assertion
    • Evidences: evidences and data that support assertion and reason
    • Link back: Ability to connect assertion, reasons, and evidences.

  1. Manner (40%) 
  • Including speaking fluency, eye contact, body gestures, and other verbal communications.
  1. Method (20%) 
  • Including structure of the case and the method of the speaker.

News Casting for Senior High School

Technical Guidelines
  1. A school is available to send maximum three contestants.
  2. All participants should wear formal suit during the competition.
  3. The topics for news casting: 
    1. Myth 
    2. History
    3.  Medication
  1. Participants are given 5 minutes to read the news.
  2. There will be a reduction in the score if the performance is less than 4 minutes.
  3. Time keepers will raise a yellow flag to give sign that the remaining time to perform is one minute. And a red flag to give sign that the time is over.
  4. Participants are allowed to read the text.
  5. Disobedience of rules will decrease the total scores.
  6. Judges decision is final and can not be changed.

The Criteria of Score
  • Content ( 1 – 20 points) 
          Matery of news are presentated by the participant, based on conformity with the chosen topic, completeness of news elements ( 5 W + 1 H).
  •  Fluency ( 1 – 30 points)
  • Intonation & Expression ( 1 – 30 points) 
          High, low, accentuation, and face expression on certain words.
  • Pronounciation ( 1 - 20 points)
  • Voice (1 - 20 points) 
          Volume and clearness of participant’s voice.
  • Performance (1 - 10 points) 
          Based on confidence, costume, and the other appeareance from participants totally.

Total Score  :  130 points



Speech Contest for Senior High School

Technical Guidelines
  1. A school is available to send maximum three contestants.
  2. Participants have to prepare 2 speeches:
    • The first one is about “Ancient Culture VS Nowadays ; Which One Is Better?
    • The other speech with free title but STILL about cultures  
  3. Participants should attend to the technical meeting, or they have to approve all conclusions.
  4. The text of the speech must be prepared as the rules:
    • Size of the paper : A4
    • Font : Calibri (body)
      • Title : Size 16 , Bold, Center
      • Text : Size 12, Justify
      • Paragraph 1,15
  5. Participants should submit a print out of the speeches to the committe during attending the technical meeting.
  6. Participants must submit:
    • 2 sheets of (3x4) photo
    • Copy of student card
  7. All participants are free to wear anything during the competition as long as it is polite.
  8. Participants are allowed to bring the text during a speech, but will resulted the influence of the score.
  9. Participants have to be ready 20 minutes before the competition starts.
  10. When the name of participants has been called but still not ready yet, participants will be recalled after the last participant. The disqualification will be given to the participants after the second recall if still not ready yet.
  11. Participants are given 7 minutes to perform a speech.
  12. Time keepers will raise a yellow flag to give a sign that the remaining time to perform is one minute. And the red flag to give sign that the time is over.
  13. There will be a score reduction if participants hit the limit, and also if the performance of participants is less than 4 minutes.
  14. Participants are given ± 3 minutes for question and answer session.
  15. Participants should prepare materials for the performances themselves.
  16. Participants are expected to use English during performances.
  17. Each school must bring minimum 3 supporters, if not, you have to pay Rp 5.000 for each supporter.
  18. Judges decisions must be obeyed. 
 
The Criteria of Score

          Matery of speech are presentated by the participant, based on benefits are delivered, interesting material, and conformity with the choosen theme.
  • Intonation (1 - 20 points)
         High, low and accentuation on certain words.
  • Pronounciation (1 - 20 points)
  • Fluency (1 - 20 points)
  • Q & A Point (1 - 20 points)
          After finish their speech, judges will ask some questions to participants about their speech. (Max 2 question for each participant)
  • Performance (1 - 20 points)
          Based on totality of participant, such as confidence, costume, body languange and the other appeareance.

  Total score : 120 points

Story Telling for Junior High School

Technical Guidelines
  1. Participants have to use english during performance.
  2. Participants submit 3 copies of the manuscript story telling to the committee at the time of re-registration.
  3. Participants were allowed to wear costume and properties that match with the story.
  4. The content of the story should be polite.
  5. Participants who has been called 3 times, but no there will be displayed in the final sequence.
  6. The committee will give you 7 minutes as minimum and 10 minutes as maximum time. The committe will warn the participant with the yellow flag when time is 5 minutes. And the committee will raise the red flag when the time is over.
  7. The jury will give one question to the participant about the story.

The Criteria of Score
  1. Performance
    • Self-confidence 10 points
    • Gesture (eye contact 5 points and interactive communication 5 points)
    • Property 10 points
    • Voice 10 points
  2. English
    • Grammar 10 points
    • Pronunciation 10 points
    • Fluency 10 points
  3. Story
    • Moral value 10 points
    • Creativity 10 points
    • Story understanding 10 points
  4. Time
    • < 7  minutes = - 5 points
    • > 10 minutes = - 5 points

Technical Guidelines
  1.  A school is avalaible to send maximum three contestants.
  2. The theme is "Bring Back Ancient Culture". You can choose the following topics:
    • Myth
    • Discovery
  3. All participants should wear formal batik.
  4. Participants are given 7 minutes to read the news.
  5. There will be a reduction in the score if the performance of participant less than 5 minutes.
  6. Time keepers will raise a flag "one minute ago" to give sign that the remaining time to perform is one minute. And another flag "time over" to give sign that the time is over.
  7. Participant should send the soft copy of text to syasyasahira@gmail.com
  8. Participants are allowed to read the text.
  9. Disobedience of rules will decrease the total score. Judges decision is final and can not be changed.
